Before You Transfer Points: A Booking Checklist
TRANSFER BASICS · 4 MIN · UK & USA good conversion rate is only one part of a successful redemption.
Confirm the reward seat first
Search through the programme you plan to book with. The same flight may be offered at different prices or may not be available through every partner. Note the exact journey, cabin, passengers and cash charge.
Confirm the account and conversion
Choose the correct issuing country and card programme. Check minimum transfers, increments, account-name rules and the estimated transfer time. A theoretical amount in a calculator may need to be rounded to a permitted transfer block.
Read the bonus terms
Check whether a promotion applies to you, when it ends and whether bonus points arrive separately. Some promotions credit bonus points after the base transfer. Do not rely on the extra points arriving immediately for a time-sensitive booking.
Keep a record and complete the booking
Review the final transfer amount and terms, retain the confirmation, then book with the airline or hotel once points arrive. A transfer is not a reservation. Check the specific partner’s rules rather than assuming a refund to your bank points is possible.
Common questions
Should I transfer just because there is a bonus?
A bonus helps only if the resulting points are useful to you at an acceptable cost. Start from an intended redemption.
