Points or Cash: How to Compare the Real Cost
REDEMPTION VALUE · 4 MIN · UK & USSubtract award cash charges first, then compare the saving against the points you spend.
Use the same trip
Compare the same dates, cabin, travellers, baggage and cancellation conditions. Use one currency for every cash input. A return cash fare cannot fairly be compared with only one direction of an award booking.
The calculation
Cash saving = comparable cash price − total award cash costs. Saving per point = cash saving ÷ points used. For £800 cash versus 50,000 points plus £200, the saving is £600, or 1.20p per point. That is an illustrative calculation, not a guaranteed valuation.
Use the currency you actually spend
If a flight needs airline miles obtained from bank rewards, calculate the bank points required at your own transfer rate. The value per bank point can differ from the value per airline mile. The calculator labels the selected reward currency.
Include practical costs
Add booking charges, positioning flights and any extra expenses needed to use the award. Also consider the value of flexibility and points you would earn on a paid ticket. Annual card fees belong in your wider earning decision rather than being silently deducted from every redemption.
Sometimes cash is the better fit
If the award cash cost is higher than a comparable cash ticket, the immediate cash saving is negative. Even a positive saving may be less useful than keeping points for a trip you want more.
Common questions
Is 1.20p always a good return?
It is a result for one example. Compare your own alternatives, flexibility and what you would realistically pay.
Does the tool convert currencies?
No. Select a display currency and enter both prices in that same currency.
