Travel points, without the jargon
START HERE · 5 MIN · UK & USBank rewards, airline miles, availability and the steps from earning to booking.
Start with the currency
A bank reward balance and an airline account are different things. Membership Rewards, HSBC Reward Points and Capital One miles are earned with an issuer. Avios, Asia Miles and Virgin Points belong to airline loyalty programmes. A card can earn airline points directly, or earn bank points you later transfer.
Work backwards from a trip
Choose a route and cabin, search the airline for reward seats, and note both the points and cash cost. Then check which of your bank programmes can transfer there. A distance estimate helps set a goal; only an actual search tells you whether the flight is bookable on your date.
Your card’s country matters
UK and US versions of a reward programme can have different partners and rates. Select the issuing country, not where you happen to be travelling. Two cards can earn the same currency at different speeds without changing its transfer ratio.
What does a reward flight cost?
Usually points plus a cash payment. Include every traveller, each direction, taxes and any carrier charges. Compare the same baggage, flexibility and cabin on a cash ticket. A high retail fare does not automatically make a redemption useful if you would never pay that fare.
A practical booking order
Find reward availability → confirm points and cash charges → check your issuer’s transfer rules and timing → transfer only the amount needed → complete the booking with the airline. Seats can disappear while a transfer processes. Do not assume that transfers can be undone.
Common questions
Does having enough points guarantee a seat?
No. Reward availability, dates, cabin and the airline’s rules still matter.
Are all points worth the same?
No. Different currencies, transfer rates and redemption options make a single universal value misleading.
