Is a Transfer Bonus Worth It? Start with the Booking
TRANSFER VALUE · 5 MIN · UK & USMore partner points can help, but check the room or seat, cash charges and timing before moving rewards.
A bonus changes conversion, not availability
A transfer bonus increases what the destination programme receives. It does not reserve a flight, reduce its taxes or guarantee a standard hotel room. Search a real redemption before moving points.
Compare the amount you need to transfer
At a hypothetical standard rate of 1 bank point to 2 hotel points, 50,000 bank points become 100,000 hotel points. A 40% partner bonus produces 140,000 hotel points. To meet a target, calculate backwards and then apply the issuer’s minimums and transfer increments.
Current UK example: Amex to Hilton
As checked on 25 October 2026, eligible UK Amex MR transfers to Hilton have a 40% bonus through 24 November 2026. The stated total rate is 1 MR to 2.8 Hilton points. Base and bonus points can arrive separately; the extra points may take up to 20 business days. Confirm the official offer before acting.
Keep flexible rewards useful
Moving a large balance for no intended booking can leave you with points you cannot use. Compare the bank rewards required for the intended stay against alternatives, rather than treating the percentage bonus as an automatic saving.
Common questions
Will this apply to my US Amex card?
No assumption should be made. Promotions depend on issuing country and account eligibility; the UK example does not establish a US offer.
Does the main flight or hotel result include every promotion?
No. Standard-rate results remain separate. Use the transfer calculator’s labelled bonus scenario only after checking that the promotion applies.
